SianKa’an Biosphere Reserve by Muyil

Boat trip between mangrove and savannah, swimming and floating, Muyil archaeological site & Picnic meal.

An Adventure in Nature

Discover a natural and cultural gem classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, combined with a visit to the fascinating Mayan archaeological site of Muyil.

We were aiming for the archaeological site of Muyil, located in the northern part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Muyil served as a trading post during the time of the ancient Mayan civilization, connecting the Caribbean Sea to the mainland. It’s the perfect place to enjoy spectacular lagoon and jungle scenery, with stunning Mayan temples such as “El Castillo,” which stands 17 meters tall.

We discover wetlands and the link that exists between different ecosystems and species of flora and fauna.

From the archaeological zone, we will follow an interpretive trail to learn about some of the most important trees in the region, as well as a few cenotes (small natural sinkholes). We will climb a wooden tower to the highest observation point in Sian Ka’an to admire the lush vegetation and freshwater wetlands.

Upon reaching the Muyil lagoon, we will have a light picnic lunch and then take our boat through two lagoons connected by a canal that has been in use for centuries.

Xlapak is the name of the building constructed at the beginning of a canal and at the beginning of a unique and unforgettable experience where we will float in crystal clear water with our life jacket among mangroves and epiphytic plants such as orchids and bromeliads for about 30 minutes listening to the birdsong and the wind moving the meadows.

After floating, we will walk back along a wooden path to find our boat which will take us back to the mainland.

Find yourself immersed in one of the most beautiful places in the world, floating in crystal-clear water, becoming one with nature.
